This is the closest analog to Apple’s MacBook Pro series. You’ll get incredible performance for a small device thanks to the standard 10th-generation Intel processors, and an optional discrete Nvidia GT inside the keyboard dock. The Surface Book 3 is available in two sizes: a 13-inch and a 15-inch. The 13-inch model lasted 12 hours in our battery test. In real-world testing, it was able to last for a full day before it needed to be plugged in.
Photograph by MicrosoftThis is a small, but cute, Surface Laptop that is as similar to the Surface Go 2 and Surface Pro. The “Go” moniker refers to the importance of portability and price, rather than power. Surface Laptop Go (7/10 WIRED Recommends), while it won’t impress you with its performance in benchmark tests, it is extremely portable and stylish. It’s very easy to use and has a solid feel. This is a rare feature at this price. The top is made of aluminum, while the bottom is made of polycarbonate resin. This is a stronger and more rigid material than typical laptop plastic. Although it feels like a $1,000 laptop the manufacturer made some compromises in order to keep the price down. The screen is not HD (1080p) resolution, and is the biggest problem. This means that text may appear slightly blurred. There are three options available. All three use the same Intel i5 chips, but have different RAM and SSD sizes. The best value option offers 8 gigabytes RAM and a 128 gigabyte SSD. The lowest-end model costs $550 but only 4 gigabytes. This won’t be enough to get you far. When you add a device into your cart, the first problem is likely to be a stumbling block. You will need to purchase the Surface Pen separately if you are purchasing a Surface Pro or Surface Book. The Surface Pro and Surface Book used to include the pen in years past. However, this is no longer the case. There are USB-C ports all over the Surface line, but Thunderbolt 3 is not supported. The connector support is available, but you don’t get the full speed. Microsoft kept its magnetic Surface Connect charger despite the availability of USB-C ports. However, this charger can also be charged with USB-C. This is a good thing if you miss Apple’s MagSafe era. However, if you are looking forward to a one connector future, Microsoft has not yet delivered.
