It’s time for us to return to The Wood. Showtime announced Wednesday that it has received a pilot order from the network for a comedy series that will be based on the popular ’90s film. Rick Famuyiwa (director and co-writer of original) has signed on as executive producer and director. Justin Hillian will write the script.
The original film was released in 1999. It featured Omar Epps and Richard T. Jones as longtime friends who struggle with various issues over the past few decades. A semi-autobiographical film from Famuyiwa, the project was co-written by Todd Boyd and also featured Sanaa Lathan, LisaRaye McCoy and Malinda Williams.The Showtime series will feature an honest look at friendship and dating from the perspective of three young Black males born and raised in Inglewood, California. The trio struggle to balance fatherhood and ambition, as their city undergoes gentrification. This forces them to ask if they are becoming closer or further apart. The Wood will feature a new generation of Black men and women, as well as new complications, such social media.
